Mission Impossible: Squirrel Hunters

A group of three students were given a mission. A mission to find squirrels on the Washtenaw Community College Campus. On this mission the group will encounter many obstacles, they might not even find any squirrels at all. Dive into this story and learn about the adventures of the group. Exploring the Washtenaw Community College campus the group of three tried to locate and take pictures of squirrels on campus for their mission to complete Project Squirrel. The Washtenaw Community Campus’ Fishbowl is where the first day of the mission was spent. At this location the group found one squirrel and took pictures of it as it scurried away. The group later determined that this squirrel was the Sciurus niger, Fox squirrel.

The second day of the mission the group went to the Washtenaw Community Campus’ Hardwoods to continue their mission to find squirrels. Finding one squirrel wasn’t enough for the group’s mission. The group entered the Hardwoods after fighting off wave after wave of mosquitoes and flies. When all of the fighting and swatting was done the group explored the many trees in the Hardwoods and found signs of squirrels being in the forest. The main sign that the group saw were stripped pine cones laying at the base of many tall trees throughout the Hardwoods. Even with these signs of squirrels in the woods there were no squirrels to be found in the Hardwoods.

The third day only brought disappointment for the group as again they tried to find another squirrel at the Washtenaw Community Campus’ Fishbowl. The group sat on a bench and waited and hoped for a squirrel to appear out of the trees. Sadly, there were no squirrels to be found that day and to just pour on the bad luck for the group no signs of squirrels were to be found. The fourth and final day of the mission the group tried to get off of their no squirrel slump by trying a new place on campus the Morris Lawrence Building. The group had decided that the big open fields of the Morris Lawrence Building would be the perfect place for squirrels to come and hang out. The long walk to the Morris Lawrence Building was put into effect. When they arrived there the group picked a spot near the lake to sit down and watch for squirrels. An hour of sitting and silence passed no squirrels seemed to want to come to the open fields of the Morris Lawrence Building. The group decided to call it on their mission. They found one squirrel in the four days of their mission. Overall the group felt disappointed because they only found one squirrel in the four days of their mission. Also they couldn’t find any information on why they couldn’t find squirrels on the Washtenaw Community College Campus. Even though this mission brought disappointment to the group, they did learn a lot from this mission. And who knows maybe the group will return to try this mission again. Stay tuned.
